Why the grass really is greener here: Award-winning water reclamation system preserves a precious resource and insures a flourishing future. In a state where 50% of any community’s drinking water is used for irrigation, this area has taken the lead with a visionary and innovative water reclamation program. And to say Stuart’s recent conversion of its wastewater treatment plant into a water reclamation facility has gone beautifully is no exaggeration—aesthetic improvements have harmonized the facility with its downtown setting, while reclamation has recharged ground water, with recycled water irrigating lawns, golf courses and flower gardens, thus preserving potable drinking water. Stuart wastewater efforts have yielded over a dozen state and national awards, but the real reward has been has been the promise of a greener, brighter future.

Witham Field, originally known as MacArthur Field, is named in honor of Homer Witham—the first Stuart aviator to die in World War II. Martin County now operates the 726-acre Airport, which is home to more than 200 private and business aircraft.
The airport has three runways, the longest of which is 5,826 feet, which allows it to accommodate most general aviation aircraft, including smaller business jets. Witham Field’s terminals are ideal for serving local users as well as those visiting the area.
The airport’s major tenants include Triumph Aerostructures - Vought Aircraft Division, an aircraft parts manufacturing company, Fair Wind Air Charter, and two fixed base operators (FBOs), Galaxy Aviation and Stuart Jet Center. While the airport supports a significant amount of business/corporate traffic, it also supports recreational activity and flight training.
The annual economic impact of Witham Field is associated with direct impacts that come from tenants/businesses located at the airport and construction projects that are undertaken by the airport or by on-site businesses. Indirect impacts are associated with spending from visitors who arrive in the area via general aviation aircraft.
The sailfish leaps into the air, shimmering in the sunlight, bringing delight and awe to bystanders in a nearby boat. With its proud dorsal fin and knife-sharp length of elongated bill, the sailfish is one of the world’s fastest fish and one of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures, flashing its iridescent stripes and dots, and changing color at will.
Sailfish swarm the waters of Stuart, Florida, finding their perfect comfort zone in our temperatures and habitat. These fast fish, however, aren’t the only pacesetters to migrate to Stuart. While Grover Cleveland was the first American leader to discover the rich advantages of life here, buying property all the way back in 1899, he was by no means the last. For more than a century, leaders and luminaries of all kinds have been drawn to the Sailfish Capital of the World, finding the ideal habitat where businesses, families and lives can flourish.
President Cleveland came here by train, but today all roads lead to Stuart, positioned strategically at the junction of the Intercoastal Waterway only 50 miles from the Bahamas and only 154 miles from the Gulf, and served by a robust intermodal infrastructure that includes highway, rail, air and barge on the Okeechobee cross-state Waterway. The county seat and the hub for Martin County cultural activities, Stuart is not unlike the mutable, many-colored sailfish, offering a rainbow of attractions and advantages in one unique community. Stuart is both historic and twenty-first century, laid back and full speed ahead, all business and nothing but fun, great sports on water and land.
But this is a city that also stands fast, unwavering in our insistence on quality, in our schools, for example, which are by all measures some of the very best in the state of Florida. Stuart is a place where today’s leaders want to educate their children to assume the leadership roles of the future. Our business environment is equally excellent, offering strategically positioned sites and a pro-growth atmosphere, along with a quality of life that makes recruitment and retention as easy as our Atlantic breeze.
All this and more, waiting here for you here in the Sailfish Capital of the World. Isn’t it time you made your leap?
